The Land Development Agency seeks more sites for affordable housing project

Dublin: The Land Development Agency (LDA) is looking for suitable land as part of the expansion of its affordable housing scheme. The agency is seeking consent from interested landowners. The agency intends to buy and complete stalled or unviable housing projects with developers and make them available through a cost rental scheme.

The agency has contracts for a total of 2,750 houses under Project Tosaigh. Furthermore, the agency has yet to complete houses on public land, despite its goal of bringing 5,000 units to market by 2028. The LDA currently has planning permission for over 35,000 houses on government-owned land.

The target is 10,000 houses.

The agency intends to construct 5,500 houses across 12 sites, some of which are already under construction. The agency may also purchase privately owned land on which to construct houses. Over the next few years, partnerships with housebuilders will make an additional 5,000 houses available. As a result, the agency intends to target 10,000 houses.

Any land will be accepted.

The agency welcomes landowners who are willing to provide land for this. According to CEO John Coleman, all landowners’ submissions will be accepted. However, large sites in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, and Waterford will be prioritised.

Sites with planning permission for at least 200 houses and adjacent to government-owned land will be given special consideration. Sites will be evaluated on criteria such as transport links, development activities, and construction costs. All information about the scheme will be available on the agency’s website.

The agency was established in 2018 to provide affordable housing on government land. The agency’s budget is 1.25 billion euros. The agency’s CEO, John Coleman, said that discussions are underway with the government regarding the provision to borrow 1.25 billion euros.
