The Met Office has warned that a white Christmas is possible in Ireland this year, with temperatures hitting minus 11 degrees Celsius

Dublin: The cold will be more severe in Ireland, according to the weather forecast. All 19 counties remain on orange alert, and the temperature in the country will reach minus 11 degrees Celsius, the Met Office has warned.

Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Portlaoise, Longford, Meath, Offaly, West Meath, Cavan, Monaghan, Clare, Kerry, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Galway, Leitrim, and Roscommon have been alerted until this afternoon. Another orange alert is in effect for Leinster, Munster, Connaught, Cavan, and Monaghan until noon on Friday. A yellow alert has also been issued for the entire country until Friday afternoon.

The overnight temperature at Longford’s Mount Dillon weather station was -7.5 degrees Celsius. However, the nighttime temperature dropped to -4-5 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures in some parts of the country could drop to -11 degrees Celsius, according to meteorologist Joanna Donnelly. She also stated that a white Christmas in Ireland could not be ruled out. Southerly winds and rain could arrive this weekend, which could ease the cold a bit. However, it may thicken again after that.

There is not a large amount of rain, there is not much snow on the coasts, and yet the temperature is dropping considerably.

The country’s coldest temperature was -19.1 degrees Celsius in January 1880. Donnelly predicted that Ireland would not reach that level this time. The lowest temperature on record was -9.7 C after Storm Emma in 2018. Donnelly previously stated that temperatures in Mayo in 2010 reached -17.5 degrees Celsius on Christmas Day.

Meanwhile, the DAA has announced that some flights have been cancelled due to bad weather. In the coming days, extreme cold weather is expected across Europe, including France and the United Kingdom. As a result, airport officials have asked passengers to check flight information on the airline’s website and app.
