Miss Universe R’Bonney Gabriel of the United States was crowned on January 15 in New Orleans. India’s Divita Rai, who made it to the top 16, missed out on the beauty pageant. Venezuela and the Dominican Republic finished second and third, respectively.
R’Bonney is a model, fashion designer, and sewing instructor. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in fashion design from the University of North Texas. She is presently the CEO of R’Bonney Nola, her own sustainable apparel company.
Puerto Rico, Haiti, Australia, the Dominican Republic, Laos, South Africa, Portugal, Canada, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, Curacao, India, Venezuela, Spain, the United States, and Colombia were among the top 16 contenders.
The last Miss Universe winner was actor-model Harnaaz Sandhu, who was named Miss Universe 2021 after defeating candidates from 80 nations—21 years after India last won the title. Before Ms. Sandhu, only two Indians had won the Miss Universe title: actresses Sushmita Sen in 1994 and Lara Dutta in 2000.
