The Office of Public Works has stated that they have no plans to remove the wild fallow deer in Phoenix Park

Dublin: The Office of Public Works has said that they have no intentions to remove the wild fallow deer in Phoenix Park.

The remark comes as Environment Minister Eamon Ryan urged for more deer hunting to address the ecological damage they pose. “For over 360 years, the wild deer herd has been a vital element of the biodiversity of Phoenix Park,” an OPW spokesman stated.

Environment Minister Eamon Ryan wants to kill deer and wild goats that eat grass and trees. According to the minister, deer graze everywhere and eat up all the vegetation, causing a major environmental problem. The minister’s remarks came in the midst of the need to hunt the excess deer in Phoenix Park. This statement by the minister is expected to enrage animal lovers.

Grazing by deer and goats is the main problem. The young trees cannot grow, so the number of deer needs to be controlled. The Minister stated that an afforestation agreement is being discussed with Coillte and Gresham House, a private investment firm based in the United Kingdom.

To allow countries to invest in forestry, EU laws must be changed. Accordingly, there needs to be a change in the laws here.

Changes in forestry practises are also required. The minister also stated that rather than a single farming model, the goal should be greater biological diversity in the forests.
