Dublin: RTE to be amended amid corruption and financial irregularities. While speaking at the National Remembrance Day ceremony at Collins Barracks in Cork, Prime Minister Leo Varadkar hinted at this. Prime Minister Leo Varadkar also suggested reforming the TV license fee system.
The Prime Minister also stated that RTE is a broadcasting centre that is critical to the country’s democracy. RTE can regain public trust only if it is thoroughly cleaned.
The prime minister has asked broadcaster Ryan Tubridy and agent Noel Kelly to appear before the Media Parliamentary Committee and provide information. Let these controversies reveal everything they have to say. Varadkar stated that their story should be told to the rest of the world. If RTE requires financial assistance, Varadkar stated that he would consider providing it under certain conditions.
Varadkar said the TV licence fee system was very outdated. The government, however, has not made a final decision on its future. In the current system, all the revenue goes directly to RTE. The Prime Minister said that it needs to be changed.
The prime minister also clarified that all public broadcasting organisations should be given proper allocations. The aim is to modernise RTE. The prime minister said that allocation will be ensured for all institutions except RTE.
Varadkar stated that he was aware of the significant changes proposed by new Director-General Kevin Bakhurst but chose not to make them public.
