The two brothers convicted of the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia

Valletta: The two brothers convicted of the murder of a journalist that shook Malta have each been sentenced to 40 years in prison. The crucial decision is in the case of Daphne Caruana Galizia, which occurred five years ago. On the first day of the trial, George and Alfred Degiorgio were sentenced. Following the murder, there was a worldwide outpouring of rage against Malta. Prime Minister Joseph Muscat was also ousted from power. Daphne Caruana Galizia, a 53-year-old journalist, was murdered in 2017. The main mastermind of the murder is thought to be Yorgen Fenech, a wealthy businessman in Malta. His trial has not yet begun. A bomb attack near his home occurred on October 16, 2017.

Prime Minister Robert Abela said on Twitter that the verdict was an important sign of justice for Caruana Galizia’s family.

The threat posed by WikiLeaks

Galizia was the most well-known blogger in the country. This investigative journalist shook the entire political scene of Malta with scandalous stories via the disclosure known as One Woman WikiLeaks. As a result, she had many adversaries, including the political elite. Galizia was then killed in a car bombing.

They have been charged with murder, causing a massive explosion, and engaging in criminal conspiracy. Vincent Muscat, the third defendant in the case, was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Journalists from all over the world flocked to the courtroom to cover the high-profile murder trial. Representatives from press freedom organisations such as Reporters Without Borders and the European Center for Press and Media Freedom were also present.

Last year, the Degiorgio brothers attempted to charge the former minister in the case. However, the court refused to allow it. Alfred arrived in a wheelchair on the court. His response in the court was that he had nothing to say.

The murder that ruined Malta’s image

The assassination of Caruana Galizia has harmed Malta’s image. Protests against Malta were held in countries all over the world. It was also viewed as a failure of Malta’s legal system.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s attempt to shield his friends and allies was also met with criticism. There was widespread public outrage at this. The Prime Minister was then forced to resign in January 2020. The government was heavily chastised in the public investigation report into Caruana Galizia’s murder. Galizia’s death was blamed on the government, according to the report. The report also mentioned that there is an atmosphere in the country where those who want to silence them cannot get away with impunity.
