The United States and Italy will make COVID screening mandatory for Chinese travelers

Washington: The United States has decided to introduce mandatory COVID tests for travellers from China. Following Beijing’s decision to lift the COVID restrictions, the United States, India, Italy, Japan, and Taiwan made this decision. As part of its exit from the COVID financial crisis, China relaxed the strict lockdown restrictions. It was also decided that all restrictions would be lifted by the beginning of next year.

The law will take effect on January 5. Officials said all air travellers aged two and above are required to have a negative COVID-19 result taken two days prior to departure from China, Hong Kong, and Macau, or a certificate of clearance ten days prior.

There have been concerns raised about large inconsistencies in the COVID data and death tolls released by China. Experts have warned that COVID could affect one million to two million people in China every day.
Although the country’s overall vaccination rate exceeds 90%, the proportion of adults who have received booster shots is low. This figure has fallen to 57.9%. As of last week, according to the Chinese government, 42.3% of people aged 80 and over had not been vaccinated. The problem is that older people are not given booster vaccinations.
Another obstacle is China’s non-approval of foreign mRNA vaccines. China has approved nine of its self-developed COVID-19 vaccines, but none have been updated to protect against the omicron variant.
