Election of Bhutto as Pakistan’s prime minister
Benazir Bhutto (21 June 1953–27 December 2007) was a Pakistani politician and stateswoman who served as the country’s 11th and 13th prime ministers, respectively, from 1988 to 1990 and 1993 to 1996. She was the first Muslim woman to lead a democracy. She was the daughter of former Pakistani Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. She was an ideological liberal and secularist who led or co-chaired the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) from the early 1980s until her assassination at a rally in 2007.
Bhutto was a polarising person who continues to be so. She was frequently chastised for her lack of political experience, accused of corruption, and faced stiff resistance from Pakistan’s Islamist lobby for her secularist and modernising agenda. Despite her domestic popularity in the early years of her tenure, she also attracted backing from Western nations, for whom she was a champion of democracy. Due to her political success in a male-dominated society after her death, she became known as an icon for women’s rights.
