Three more refugee centres are to open in Ireland

Dublin: The government is considering developing various sites for refugee housing, including one previously earmarked for Mountjoy Prison.

Columb Barracks, a former military facility in Mullingar, Westmeath, where refugees are housed in tents, and Dublin’s Central Mental Hospital will also be developed into refugee centres. The three locations are expected to accommodate 400 people. It is expected that the project will be approved at today’s Cabinet meeting.

Prime Minister Leo Varadkar put forward such a proposal through Integration Minister Roderic O’Gorman and Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien. The sites will be developed by the Prime Minister’s Accommodation Working Group.

The Prime Minister has proposed allocating €20 million for the development of sites such as Thornton Hall in North Dublin, which have been designated for the upgrade of Mountjoy Prison to a super prison. Apart from this, €5 million has been allocated for feasibility studies at two other sites.
