“Tragic Accident in Claremorris Claims Lives of a Young Woman and Two Girls”

Claremorris: Tragedy struck in Claremorris as a car lost control and collided with a truck, claiming the lives of a woman and two girls. The devastating accident occurred on the N17 near Castlegar, County Mayo, at 2 p.m. yesterday, with all three victims succumbing to their injuries at the scene. Their bodies were transported to Mayo University Hospital for a post-mortem examination, while the road was temporarily closed as Garda Forensic Collision Investigators assessed the scene.

Expressing profound sadness over the incident, Prime Minister-designate Simon Harris described it as Mayo’s darkest day. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of Tom and Eileen Mahon, who tragically perished in a fire in Swinford. The impact of these tragedies reverberated throughout the entire county, emphasised local councillor Richard Finn.

The grim reality of road safety in Ireland is starkly illustrated by the latest statistics, with 52 lives lost in accidents thus far this year, marking a troubling increase of 10 fatalities compared to the same period last year. The month alone has seen 14 lives lost, averaging one death every 48 hours.

In light of this, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána urged anyone with information about the crash, including dash-cam footage, to come forward. They can reach out to Claremorris Garda Station at 094 9372080, contact the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or visit any Garda station to provide assistance.
