Last day, a devastating collision in Carlow resulted in the loss of three young lives, identified as Daryl Culbert from Kiltegan, Wicklow; Michael Kelly from Nurney, Co. Carlow; and Katie Graham (19) from Arles, Co. Laois. The fatal incident occurred when the red Lexus they were travelling in collided with a tree around 11.30 p.m. on Wednesday.
The two men, both in their 20s, lost their lives, while a fourth individual, a man in his early 20s from nearby Ballinabrannagh, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He is being transferred to a Dublin hospital for further treatment.
The bodies of the deceased have been taken to University Hospital Waterford for autopsies, with formal identification expected later. Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, Denis Nulty, and Church of Ireland Bishop of Cashel, Ferns and Ossory, Adrian Wilkinson, expressed condolences, offering prayers to the grieving families.
Local authorities had previously raised concerns about the road’s safety, which is a main route from Portlaoise to Rosslare. Fianna Fáil councillor John McDonald highlighted recent crashes on the road, while Mayor of Carlow Cllr Tom O’Neill called the incident “heartbreaking.”
Fr. Tom Little, who gave the victims the last rites, described the deaths as a “terrible loss” for the community. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar expressed condolences, and the Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward, urging those with relevant camera footage to assist in the investigation.
