Trump and Harris Clash on Key Global Issues in Heated First Presidential Debate

The first and potentially only presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris ended with mixed reactions from political experts and viewers.

The pair appeared together on the debate stage on Tuesday, September 10, to discuss various issues. Trump emphasised his “America First” agenda, focussing on economic policies, inflation control, border security, and foreign relations. Supporters like Elise Stefanik praised Trump’s performance, accusing Harris of deflecting from her record on issues like fracking and immigration.

Meanwhile, commentators from outlets like Fox News, including Brit Hume, felt Harris performed better, citing her ability to remain composed and effectively counter Trump’s points. Swing-state voters and some analysts favoured Harris for her professionalism, confidence, and strategic jabs at Trump.

The debate highlighted contrasting styles, with Trump seen as repetitive and defensive, while Harris appeared poised and prepared. Political experts noted that Harris’s composure, combined with gender dynamics and visual presentation, worked to her advantage.

Donald Trump and Kamala Harris took strong but contrasting stances on global issues, particularly the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. Harris advocated for a two-state solution in Gaza, supported Israel’s right to defend itself, and called for a ceasefire, but acknowledged peace is still distant. Trump offered less detail, instead criticising Harris and claiming the conflicts would not have occurred under his leadership.

On Ukraine, Trump argued that Russia would not have invaded if he were president and claimed he could resolve the war quickly. Harris countered by accusing Trump of being susceptible to manipulation by dictators and warned that his approach could weaken Ukraine and endanger NATO allies. Trump also criticised the Biden administration’s handling of the Afghanistan withdrawal, while Harris defended the decision but blamed Trump for negotiating a weak exit deal during his term.

Before the debate began, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump shook hands. It is worth noting, however, that Trump and President Joe Biden did not exchange handshakes during their presidential debate two months ago.
