Rescuers dragged children from the debris of the Turkey-Syria earthquake as the death toll surpassed 24,000 and a winter chill exacerbated the misery of millions of people, many of whom were in dire need of assistance. According to the UN, at least 870,000 people in both nations urgently required food following the earthquake, which has left up to 5.3 million people homeless in Syria alone. Aftershocks from Monday’s 7.8-magnitude earthquake have added to the death toll and disrupted the lives of survivors.
NASA satellites are helping Turkey, Syria earthquake response.
Following the massive earthquakes that struck southern Turkey and western Syria on February 6, killing thousands, NASA announced on Saturday that it is working to share aerial views and data from space to aid relief and recovery workers, as well as to improve its ability to model and predict such events.
A team of scientists from the Earth Observatory of Singapore and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California used images acquired before and after the earthquake to generate a damage proxy map for Turkey.
These maps compare radar images from before and after a certain incident to show how the terrain has altered.
“NASA’s hearts and prayers are with those affected by the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson stated.
Ireland: Twenty six of the Irish aid agency goal have been confirmed dead in the Turkey and Syria earthquakes, as the death toll now stands at more than 21,000.
