“Turkish Parliament Greenlights Sweden’s NATO Membership with Overwhelming Majority Vote”

Ankara: In a significant development, the Turkish Parliament has officially endorsed Sweden’s NATO membership after a prolonged period of deliberation. The approval garnered a substantial majority, with 287 votes in favour and 57 against.

Sweden, with this endorsement, is set to become the 32nd member of NATO, marking a crucial milestone in its international relations. The approval came after receiving the support of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and it is anticipated that President Erdogan will formally sign the relevant documents in the near future. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed his satisfaction, emphasising that Sweden is now a step closer to achieving full NATO membership.

Welcoming the decision, NATO Chief Jens Stoltenberg acknowledged the significance of Sweden’s accession and urged Hungary to consider a similar path. The addition of Sweden to NATO is widely perceived as a reinforcement of the alliance, further strengthening its collective capabilities.
