Two Arrested at Shannon Airport Protest Against U.S. Military Presence

Claire: Two individuals protesting against the use of Shannon Airport by the U.S. military were arrested for public order violations. The demonstration was organised by pro-Palestinian groups, including Shannonwatch, Care Palestine Belfast, and Mothers Against Genocide. A number of political figures attended the protest, including Independent MEP Luke Ming Flanagan and People Before Profit (PBP) TD Richard Boyd Barrett.

People Before Profit claimed that thousands participated in the demonstration. Boyd Barrett had previously questioned the Taoiseach on why Ireland had not banned armed U.S. military flights through Shannon Airport, citing concerns that the U.S. provides missiles and weapons used by Israel against Lebanon and Gaza. He also criticised the government for refusing to condemn these actions.

In response, the Taoiseach reiterated Ireland’s clear stance on international law, stating that the country’s position had been made clear in relation to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling on the distribution of defence equipment. Minister Simon Harris added that the government’s position should not be misrepresented.

To manage the protest, the Gardaí implemented extensive security measures. Officers from the Garda Public Order Unit, as well as personnel from the Clare, Limerick, Tipperary, and Cork divisions, were deployed to maintain order.
