DUBLIN: The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) has confirmed 514 new COVID-19 cases in Republic of Ireland yesterday. The total number of confirmed cases now stands at 252,809.

The NPHET also confirmed that two further deaths have been recorded in the country, bringing the death toll from COVID-19 to 4,921.

Of the cases confirmed yesterday, 259 were men and 248 were women. 75% were under 45 years of age, and the average age of those tested positive was 28 years.

As of yesterday morning, 116 COVID-19 patients had been admitted to the hospital and 31 were being treated in the ICU.

As of 7 May, 1,799,190 COVID-19 vaccine doses were administered in Ireland. 1,305,178 people received their first dose, and 494,012 received their second dose. Ireland also set a new vaccination record last Friday, with 52,000 jabs administered.

“Vaccination is working. It’s having a very good impact and we can see with the hospitalisation numbers, they’re in the right direction and the ICU numbers are down to low 30s now,” Taoiseach Micheál Martin said after receiving his first dose of COVID-19 vaccine yesterday.

The Taoiseach received his first dose of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine yesterday from the Cork City Hall vaccination centre.

He said vaccination would make further progress as higher and higher volumes of vaccines arrive in the country in late May and June.

Mr. Matin said the HSE aims to deliver between 250,000 and 270,000 vaccine doses next week. He also said that their target is to administer the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine to 80% of adult population by the end of June.

Meanwhile, in Northern Ireland 98 new corona virus cases have been confirmed, with no further deaths.
