Two men die during Ironman triathlon in Ireland

Two men died at an Ironman competition in Ireland. They were pulled from the water by rescue workers but were declared dead on the spot, according to police. The men were in their forties and sixties. They were involved in separate events during the race’s swimming leg in Youghal, Co. Cork, according to police, who added that they are investigating and the coroner has been alerted.

The event was rescheduled from Saturday owing to floods and poor course conditions caused by Storm Betty. Cork County Council issued a statement saying it is “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two race participants during the Ironman 70.3 Ireland, Cork 2023 event in Youghal.” Our deepest sympathies go out to the families and friends of the athletes at this incredibly difficult time.”
