DUBLIN: Two women have been arrested at Dublin airport for refusing to go to the hotel quarantine. The women – aged in their 30s, will be arraigned in court this morning. It is learned that the two had travelled to Dubai for cosmetic surgery.
A senior source said: “Defence Forces personnel at the airport had informed these ladies that they were legally obliged to go to a quarantine hotel but they simply refused and the gardai were called.”
“The women stuck to their convictions when gardai arrived and they ended up getting arrested.
“They are due to be brought before court in the morning and what is very possible is that they may have to go to the quarantine hotel after that appearance as well as possibly getting a significant fine,” the source added.
Details of the arrest were confirmed in a Garda statement.
“After failing to comply with Gardaí two women, aged in their 30s, were arrested for breaches of the Health Act and taken to Ballymun Garda Statio,” a garda spokesman said.
“Both women have since been charged. They are due to appear before the Criminal Courts of Justice, Court 2, tomorrow at 10.30am,” the spokesman added.
26 more countries added to list of high-risk countries
Twenty-six additional countries have been added to the list of high-risk countries. Currently, travellers from 33 high-risk countries are required to quarantine 12 nights in a designated hotel. The government has decided to add 26 countries to the list, including Kuwait and Qatar. However, no EU countries are included in the list.
Those arriving in Ireland after 4 am on Tuesday, April 6, will be subjected to mandatory hotel quarantine. With this, a total of 58 countries have been included in the list of high-risk countries.
The Department of Health is responsible for enforcing the mandatory hotel quarantine legal system. The Defence Forces will oversee security at airports and hotels. But neither the army personnel nor the security guards have the legal power to stop people from leaving the hotel. However, failure to comply with quarantine rules could result in passengers being fined €2,000 or imprisoned for up to a month.
