Nearly 20 million children aged 12–17, or about one in five, experienced at least one form of technology-facilitated sexual exploitation or abuse across 21 countries in a single year, according to a new UNICEF report.
The report found that more than 15 million children encountered unwanted sexual content, while around 9 million were pressured into sexual conversations or sharing images. About 4 million had sexual images shared without their consent.
Social media platforms accounted for nearly 60% of reported cases, while 14% occurred through online gaming. Importantly, 57% of incidents involved someone the child already knew, challenging the belief that online abuse is mainly carried out by strangers.
UNICEF also highlighted the severe emotional impact, with affected children reporting higher levels of anxiety, self-harm and suicidal thoughts. More than 40% of cases were never disclosed, while less than 1% were reported to authorities.
UNICEF has called on governments, technology companies and communities to strengthen online safety measures, improve reporting systems and provide better protection and support for children.
