United Ireland will become a reality in 10 years; President Mary Lou McDonald shares Sinn Féin’s dream

DUBLIN: Party President Mary Lou McDonald shares Sinn Féin’s dream of a united Ireland. She made it clear that United Ireland would become a reality in 10 years. The party’s political views were revealed in an interview with British journalist Owen Jones.

Sinn Féin President said it was a decade of opportunity for United Ireland. She said that there can be a referendum on Irish unity within the next decade, and that it has a very strong chance of winning. Mary Lou McDonald expressed hope that a referendum on Irish unity would take place soon.

Ms. McDonald also assured the Ulster Unionists that they would remain British if Northern Ireland voted in favor of Irish unity. “We have citizens that are British…they are British in a partitioned Ireland and they will be British in a united Ireland,” she said. The Sinn Féin leader said United Ireland needed a lot of preparation. She asked the Unionists to be part of the conversation on reunification.

Meanwhile, Ms. McDonald has criticized Taoiseach Michéal Martin’s approach to a united Ireland. She alleged that he was too slow and that this would not bring relief to anyone on the island, including the Unionists in Northern Ireland.

President McDonald said that the responsible thing was to prepare for a united Ireland and to take into account the views and concerns of the various members of the community. But none of this happens. McDonald clarified that Irish unity is a “commonsense approach.”

She says that it is the most favourable plan for everyone living on the Irish island as the United Kingdom prepares to cut ties with the European Union.
