University Hospital Galway Ranks Third in Ireland, Overcrowding with 44 Patients on Trolleys

University Hospital Galway has been identified as the third most overcrowded medical facility in the country, with a total of 44 patients awaiting placement on trolleys. Within the hospital, there are 36 patients currently occupying space within the Emergency Department on trolleys, and an additional 8 patients who lack available beds in the wards.

Similarly, Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe is facing challenges, with eight admitted patients lacking proper accommodations today. Of these, 5 are situated on trolleys in the emergency department, while the remaining 3 are located within the hospital’s wards.

According to figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), there are 559 individuals across the nation currently in hospitals without available beds. The most heavily affected facilities include University Hospital Limerick, with 108 patients experiencing overcrowding, followed by Cork University Hospital with 45 cases, University Hospital Galway with 44 cases, and Sligo University Hospital with 38 cases.
