Washington: The ongoing tariff measures introduced by the United States are rapidly evolving into a full-blown trade war between the US and China, with significant implications for the global economy.
In response to China’s imposition of an 84% tariff on American imports, US President Donald Trump announced a sharp escalation—raising tariffs on Chinese goods to 125%. At the same time, Trump declared a 90-day suspension of tariffs on a range of other countries and reduced general tariff rates to 10%, reinforcing the perception that China is being singled out as America’s primary trade adversary.
These swift developments have had an immediate impact on global financial markets, with Wall Street indices surging in the wake of Trump’s announcements. Despite extending tariff relief to multiple nations, the US remains unyielding in its stance toward China, intensifying trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
The Chinese government has condemned the US measures as “economic blackmail” and has lodged a formal complaint with the World Trade Organisation (WTO), further escalating the diplomatic and economic standoff.
President Trump justified the 90-day suspension of tariffs for select nations by pointing to their willingness to engage in negotiations and refrain from retaliatory actions. However, he emphasised that tariffs on China would remain firmly in place, citing national interest and unfair trade practices.
Meanwhile, tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and key sectors such as steel, aluminum, and automobiles remain unchanged.
Reacting to the developments, Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris welcomed the 90-day reprieve, stating that it provides a crucial window for dialogue and offers temporary relief for Irish exporters. Harris, who recently met with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, reaffirmed Ireland’s support for constructive negotiations aimed at de-escalating global trade tensions.
