US Deploys Aircraft Carrier and Jets to Eastern Mediterranean Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict

In the wake of the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas militants in Palestine, the United States has taken significant military action by deploying an aircraft carrier, ships, and fighter jets to the eastern Mediterranean. US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin has confirmed the likelihood of additional fighter jets being dispatched to the region. This move comes as Tel Aviv formally declared war on Sunday, responding to unprecedented large-scale attacks by Gaza-based Palestinian militant group Hamas the previous day.

The ongoing conflict, sparked by Hamas’ operation known as ‘Operation Al-Aqsa Flood,’ has resulted in a devastating toll with over 1,100 casualties on both sides, leaving thousands wounded and displaced. Furthermore, concerns mount as more than 130 Israelis and other nationals are feared to have been taken hostage by Hamas.

The crisis escalated on Saturday when Hamas launched a triple attack on Israel, involving rocket barrages, a successful infiltration into southern towns, and sending armed militants through another route. In response, Israel initiated a massive airstrike operation, claiming to have eliminated 400 militants. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to reduce the group to “rubble.”

As the conflict entered its second day, the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah joined the fray by launching rocket strikes against Israel in its northern region, citing solidarity with the Palestinians. The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees reports a significant increase in the number of people forced to flee their homes in Gaza, with nearly 74,000 people seeking safety overnight.
