Dublin: Immigration from the US to Ireland almost doubled in the year to April 2025, with 9,600 arrivals compared to 4,900 in 2024, according to Central Statistics Office (CSO) data. This sharp rise came despite an overall 16% fall in gross immigration to Ireland.
At the same time, Irish emigration to the US increased by 22%, rising from 5,000 to 6,100.
Overall, Ireland recorded 125,300 immigrants and 65,600 emigrants, leaving net inward migration at 59,700—down from 79,300 in 2024. It marks the fourth consecutive year with more than 100,000 arrivals.
Breakdown of immigrants includes:
- 31,500 returning Irish citizens
- 25,300 EU citizens
- 4,900 UK citizens
- 63,600 citizens from other countries
Emigration fell 6% year-on-year, the first decline since 2020, with 35,000 Irish citizens making up the largest group leaving the country.
The figures come amid political debate on migration, following Ireland’s acceptance of almost 68,000 Ukrainian refugees in 2022 and government pledges to adopt a stricter immigration strategy, including more deportations.
