Tehran: The military confrontation between the United States and Iran has intensified, fuelling fears that the Middle East could be drawn into a broader regional conflict. Both sides have exchanged fresh attacks, with the United States carrying out another round of airstrikes on Iranian military targets and Iran responding with missile and drone attacks aimed at American military installations in the region.
US Reports Military Casualties
According to U.S. military officials, two American service members were killed in a ballistic missile and drone attack on a military base in Jordan. Another soldier remains unaccounted for, while an investigation is underway after unidentified human remains were recovered from the attack site.
Separately, another U.S. soldier reportedly died while attempting to dispose of an explosive device recovered from a downed Iranian drone in northern Iraq. One additional service member was injured. U.S. Central Command said the incidents have increased the number of American military casualties since the conflict began.
Fresh US Airstrikes Target Iranian Military Sites
Following the attacks on its personnel, the United States launched a new wave of airstrikes targeting Iranian military infrastructure, including command centres, air defence systems, coastal surveillance facilities, missile and drone launch sites, and communications networks.
Explosions were reported in several Iranian cities, including Tabriz, Chabahar, Konarak, Bandar Mahshahr and Bandar Imam Khomeini. Iranian authorities have not released an official assessment of casualties or the extent of the damage.
Iran also accused the United States of striking the Darkhovin nuclear power plant under construction in southwestern Iran, describing the attack as a serious violation of international law.
Iran Targets US Bases in the Region
Iran said it launched drone and missile attacks against U.S. military facilities in Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan.
Among the reported targets were Ali Al Salem Air Base and military facilities at Camp Udairi in Kuwait, as well as Patriot air defence systems, radar installations and weapons storage sites.
Air raid sirens were activated in Bahrain, home to the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, while Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan placed their air defence systems on high alert.
Iran also claimed to have launched ballistic missiles toward U.S. military facilities near Aqaba in Jordan. The Jordanian military said several incoming missiles were intercepted before reaching their intended targets.
Israel on High Alert
Israel has warned that Iranian missiles fired toward Aqaba could potentially enter Israeli airspace. The Israeli military has advised residents to remain alert and warned that air raid sirens could sound if the security situation deteriorates.
Although Israel has so far avoided direct involvement in the latest phase of the conflict, it has stated that it would respond decisively if Iranian missiles or drones strike Israeli territory.
Diplomatic observers warn that any direct military confrontation between Israel and Iran could significantly widen the conflict across the region.
Strait of Hormuz Tensions Deepen
The crisis has also heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes.
Iran claimed it intercepted two vessels attempting to enter the strait without permission, while reports also emerged of a ship catching fire off the coast of Oman.
Concerns over maritime security have disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil exports, with reports indicating a decline in both oil tanker and cargo traffic.
Oil Prices Rise Amid Global Market Concerns
The escalating conflict has pushed international crude oil prices higher, reflecting growing concerns over potential disruptions to global energy supplies.
Approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz, and economists warn that any prolonged disruption could lead to higher fuel prices, increased freight costs and renewed inflationary pressures worldwide.
Diplomatic Outlook Remains Uncertain
Iran has vowed to continue responding to U.S. military operations, with senior officials warning that further American strikes would trigger additional military action against U.S. bases in the region.
The United States has maintained that, despite the ongoing hostilities, diplomatic channels have not been completely closed.
However, with both sides continuing to exchange military strikes and regional tensions mounting, analysts warn that the Middle East remains at risk of a wider conflict unless efforts to de-escalate the crisis succeed.
