Dublin: US President Donald Trump is expected to visit Ireland next month, with plans to attend the Irish Open in Doonbeg, Co. Clare, and hold meetings in Dublin.
Trump is scheduled to arrive on 12 September, following the annual 9/11 commemorations in the United States. He is expected to attend the final day of the Irish Open on 13 September and is also likely to meet Micheál Martin during his visit.
As the Dáil and Seanad will remain in summer recess until 16 September, parliamentary addresses or events at Leinster House are not expected. It also remains unclear whether Catherine Connolly will meet Trump, as the visit is understood to be unofficial and her schedule has yet to be confirmed.
The visit was discussed during Micheál Martin’s meeting with Trump at the White House on St Patrick’s Day earlier this year. Trump’s trip follows former US President Joe Biden’s visit to Ireland in 2023.
Opposition Criticises Planned Visit
The proposed visit has drawn criticism from opposition figures. Labour MEP Aodhán Ó Ríordáin said Ireland should not “roll out the red carpet” for Trump, citing concerns over his foreign policy positions, including his stance on the European Union, the Middle East, Ukraine and international law. He urged the Irish government to use the visit to raise these issues directly with the US President.
