DUBLIN: The government has come up with good news for Irish travellers that people who have been immunised will now be able to fly without restrictions or self-isolation. The government has said it has prepared vaccine passports for Irish travellers.
Tánaiste Leo Varadkar revealed in the Dáil the details of new travel documents that will help people fly again. Mr. Varadkar said that “an immunisation document ready that people will get with a QR code on it to show that they have been immunised.”
The Irish Government hopes that the new move will boost the tourism and hospitality sector, which has been hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Passengers are less likely to hesitate to travel as no self-isolation is required if they are COVID negative. In that sense, the government’s calculations are right.
Also, this will pave the way for mutual adjustment with other countries to allow travel between green zones.
“I see the advantage in people being able to prove that they’ve had the vaccine and/or that they’ve tested negative,” the Tánaiste said.
“In other countries, like Israel for example, they’re using that to say that if you have it you don’t have to self-isolate and the same applies to travel, opening now between Cyprus and Greece, but we’re just not at that point yet in Europe, we’re just not. The science doesn’t yet say that being vaccinated is enough to say that you don’t get the virus and pass it on, but I do hope that we will get there,” Mr. Varadkar added.
