Dublin: Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris has announced that VAT rates for small businesses will be abolished. The announcement was made during a Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting, where Harris outlined a series of key fiscal measures aimed at supporting small enterprises and easing the cost of living for families.
According to Harris, the VAT exemption will primarily benefit sectors such as food services, entertainment, and personal care — including hairdressing — as previously signalled by the party.
He also confirmed that the forthcoming budget will be expansionary in nature, with most of its measures set to take effect from January next year. Addressing concerns about household expenses, Harris acknowledged that childcare fees remain a significant financial burden for many families, likening them to a “second mortgage”. He pledged that these costs would be meaningfully reduced during the government’s current term.
In addition to childcare, Harris stressed the importance of improving efficiency in public spending, specifically calling for reduced costs in both the education and healthcare sectors. He also highlighted the urgent need for substantial progress in children’s disability services and special education.
