Dublin: Police in Northern Ireland are investigating violent clashes involving rival football supporters ahead of Friday night’s League of Ireland match between Bohemians and Derry City. Masked youths were seen hurling fireworks and wielding bats and iron bars near the Lecky Road flyover in Derry.
Injuries and Property Damage Reported
A teenage boy and a man in his twenties were hospitalised with injuries sustained during the violence. Damage was also caused to nearby buildings and vehicles.
Tensions persisted throughout the game at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium. PSNI officers and stadium staff worked together to restore order. No arrests have been made yet.
Superintendent William Calderwood stated the incident appeared to be pre-arranged. Authorities are reviewing video footage to identify those involved.
Local SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan, present at the match, described the violence as “frightening” and condemned the actions of those involved. He called the incident unprecedented in its scale and severity.
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) confirmed it is investigating the events in coordination with both clubs and relevant authorities.
