Dublin: Uisce Éireann has announced a Water Conservation Order—commonly known as a hosepipe ban—for counties Cork (excluding Cork City), Waterford, Tipperary, and Wexford. The ban will remain in place until September 16th due to ongoing water supply pressures. Existing bans in Mullingar (Westmeath), Milford (Donegal), and Kells-Oldcastle (Meath) remain active until August 4th.
Why Is a Hosepipe Ban Necessary?
The ban restricts the use of hosepipes for non-essential purposes, such as garden watering and car washing. Uisce Éireann reports a significant increase in water demand, worsened by low rainfall over the past year and a surge in usage due to warm weather and tourism.
Approximately 50 water supplies nationwide are classified as being in drought conditions. Efforts to maintain supply include leakage repairs, water tankering, pressure management, and conservation awareness campaigns.

Uisce Éireann urges households and businesses to reduce consumption:
- Avoid hosepipes and pressure washers; use watering cans instead.
- Wash cars with a bucket and sponge to conserve water.
- Turn off taps while brushing teeth—save up to six litres per minute.
- Opt for showers over baths, and limit shower time.
- Run full loads in washing machines and dishwashers to save water and energy.
