What a spectacular night of matches!

Japan defeated Spain 2-1 as both qualified for the Round of 16 from Group E. Germany and Costa Rica were eliminated.

Germany overcame Costa Rica 4-2, after falling behind 2-1 for a few minutes in the second half. Japan defeated Spain 2-1 in the second Group E game to go to the Round of 16 as group champions. La Roja finished second, with Germany and Costa Rica finishing third and fourth, respectively.

Belgium could not score and hence have been knocked out of the World Cup, Morocco, meanwhile go through as group winners.

Belgium tumbled out of the World Cup in the group stage following a 0-0 draw with Croatia on Thursday, sending the 2018 runners-up into the knockout phase. Romelu Lukaku wasted a string of late chances. Croatia had a penalty awarded to them controversially disallowed by VAR early in the first half. The entrance of Lukaku at the interval altered the game, but he was responsible for three awful misses as Zlatko Dalic’s side rode their luck to hold on.

Morocco takes first place in the group with seven points. Croatia is in second place with five points, while Belgium is in third place with four. Canada is fourth, having lost all three of its matches.
