Dublin: Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar expressed concern about the country’s rise of the far right and the spread of racism. Referring to the unusual protests that have taken place in the country in recent days, the Prime Minister told reporters that it was “not the Irish way” and it “cannot be accepted.”
“The scenes and events that we have seen recently are really condemnable; they are not in keeping with our history and culture.” “Protests are typically held near buildings that house vulnerable people and children,” he stated. He went on to say that any violence or violation of the law would be dealt with by the Gardaí.
Joe O’Brien, Minister of State for Integration, stated that the country is experiencing a housing shortage and that all government departments must collaborate to address it. He went on to say that he was concerned about the current situation, but that he was keeping an eye on developments and had taken steps in recent days, and that those legally seeking asylum in Ireland would not be turned away.
According to reports, no cap on the number of refugees entering the country has been set, and instead, disinformation is being spread in their areas while the Integration Department’s lack of communication raises concerns.
Some politicians have criticised the crisis management department, citing the issue of resource strain in some communities, such as schools and primary care clinics. According to senior government officials, 180,000 refugees are expected to arrive in Ireland by the end of the year.
