With a small catch, a Galway five-bedroom property is offering rent-free accommodation for the entire year

A five-bedroom property in Galway is being offered rent-free for a year with one little condition.

The house is in the Connemara Gaeltacht and is being provided rent-free by the local school for the academic year 2023-2024, but there is a catch.

It is exclusively offered to families with children who attend the school.

Scoil Naomh Padraig must raise attendance in the coming school year or risk losing a teacher.

Today, the school’s principal stated that she anticipates a lot of interest in the proposal and hopes that the school will stay at the heart of the community for future generations.

“Once the school closes, you lose that sense of community where everyone is together, and it would be such a shame,” Ms. Uí Fhiric added.

“We have a lovely school in a lovely area, with wonderful facilities.” We have a pitch, a playground, garden activities, and an outdoor school in a lovely setting.”

It would be advantageous if you knew Irish, but it is not required.

The Comharchumann Dhiche Sheoigheach Teo co-op and local business ECC donated the house to the school.

This isn’t the first time rent-free housing has been given in Galway; as back in July, Inis Meáin, the middle of the three Aran Islands, announced a special initiative.

The island was seeking for an Irish family to reside in a local property for a year without paying rent. Those interested in taking advantage of this project, like the Connemara initiative, must have school-age children and be open to studying and participating in the Irish language.

The winning families were determined after evaluating over 1,600 applications.

Rónán Mac An tSaoir of Co. Meath and Valerie Sheehy of Limerick were picked as the winners.

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw the advertisement because it’s something we’ve dreamed of for years,” one of the winners said.
