€500 fine from today for those who are trying to go abroad to celebrate holidays

DUBLIN: People trying to leave Ireland to celebrate holidays will be fined €500 from today (Monday).

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly recently signed the first regulations for the implementation of strict control measures related to travel.

The new order states that from February 1, those who travel to a port or airport to leave the country without a valid reason will be fined €500.

5km rule

Violating travel restrictions is a pleasure for certain people. These restrictions do not apply to such people. They will have their own ‘essential reasons’ to get out.

However, the Gardai is now taking strong action against those who leave their homes for such trivial reasons and are in violation of the 5 km rule.

As part of COVID-19 restrictions, people can only go out to a maximum of 5km. Under the new rules, the Gardai can impose a fine of €100 on anyone who violates the 5km travel limit.

However, there are certain allowances in cases such as if a person is travelling to or returning home from work that is considered to be an essential service.
