Gardai fined thousands of people since tightening of COVID-19 travel restrictions; strict restrictions will continue in the coming weeks

DUBLIN: Gardai has fined nearly a thousand people since January 11, following the tightening of COVID-19 travel restrictions.

As of Thursday, Gardai had fined 771 people for making non-essential trips. In addition, 200 more cases are currently being inspected and processed by Garda officials. Last weekend, more than 300 fines were imposed in connection with non-essential travel.

Almost 150 fines were issued in the Dublin Metropolitan Region, while 315 in east, 213 in south, and 99 in North West. Of those fined, 77% were men and 23% were women.

Garda reminds people that they are only allowed to travel within 5 km of their home. With this in mind, they also advise the public on the need to plan their activities over the weekend.

The Gardai has made it clear that fines would be levied not only on the driver but also on adult passengers who violate non-essential travel rules. They said that this also applies to activities such as cycling and walking.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner, Policing and Security, John Twomey said that “the vast majority of people are complying with the non-essential travel regulations. This is very welcome.”

“However, there are still some people who are not compliant. These regulations are in place to protect public health.”

“If people want to protect our health service and support our doctors, nurses and other front-line workers who are putting themselves in harm’s way every day to tackle Covid-19 then they should stay home. They should only make essential journeys, reduce their contacts, practice social distancing, and wash their hands. Please stay safe and keep others safe by staying home,” he added.
