DUBLIN — Garda Kevin Flatley, 49, a long-serving member of the Roads Policing Unit, was fatally injured when a speeding motorbike collided with him during a checkpoint operation on the R132 Old Swords to Balbriggan road near Lissenhall. The incident occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m. while Flatley was using a speed detection device and attempted to stop the motorcyclist.
Despite the swift arrival of emergency services, Flatley was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was later transferred to Dublin City Mortuary. The motorcyclist involved in the incident sustained serious injuries and was transported to Beaumont Hospital for treatment.
A father of two daughters, Garda Flatley is the 90th Garda officer to lose his life in the line of duty. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief across the country. Flags were flown at half-mast at Garda Headquarters in Phoenix Park and at the Garda Memorial in tribute to his service.
Widespread Condolences and National Mourning
Garda Commissioner Drew Harris expressed profound sorrow over the loss, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Kevin Flatley. He was a dedicated officer who served the Gardaí and the public with unwavering commitment for over 26 years. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this heartbreaking time.”
The Garda Sergeants and Inspectors’ Association (AGSI) described Flatley’s death as a “tragic and devastating loss”, calling it a dark day for the force. AGSI President Declan Higgins assured that the association will provide full support to Flatley’s family. General Secretary Ronan Klogher and GRA President Mark O’Meara also conveyed their condolences.
Condolences have been extended from across the political spectrum and the broader community. Taoiseach Micheál Martin described the incident as “truly shocking”. President Michael D. Higgins paid tribute to Flatley’s life of public service, noting his commitment to ensuring the safety of others. Tánaiste Simon Harris said Flatley was a respected figure, while Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan called his death a profound loss for the Gardaí and the nation. Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien described it as “a great tragedy”.
Other tributes came from Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald, Dublin-Fingal TD Louise O’Reilly, Assistant Garda Commissioner Paul Cleary, the Policing and Community Safety Authority, and the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), which also expressed its condolences.

Gardaí have launched a full investigation and are appealing to the public for assistance. They are particularly interested in tracking the movements of the motorcycle between 12:00 p.m. and the time of the collision.
