Dublin: The maximum age limit for school bus drivers employed by Bus Éireann has been increased from 70 to 72, allowing experienced drivers to remain in service longer.
John Paul O’Shea described the move as a practical step to help ease ongoing pressures on the school transport system, noting that many capable and medically fit drivers were previously required to retire prematurely.
Seán Kyne also welcomed the decision, highlighting that the previous limit excluded experienced drivers despite their ability to continue working safely.
Both politicians suggested further reforms could shift the focus from fixed age limits to medical fitness and capability, particularly as demand for school transport continues to grow, especially in rural areas.
