Dublin: AIB has introduced a new identity verification feature within its mobile banking app, allowing customers to authorise payments using a selfie instead of the traditional card reader.
This new functionality enables users to make payments of up to €10,000 in a single transaction. Previously, such high-value transfers and recurring payments required the use of a card reader in conjunction with a debit card. The bank has now replaced that system with biometric facial recognition technology, streamlining the process and enhancing user convenience.
According to AIB, the new selfie verification system offers the same level of security as the card reader and can be completed quickly and easily via the mobile app. To enroll, customers should navigate to Settings > Security and Access within the AIB app, select Selfie Check, and follow the on-screen instructions.
Once registered, users making payments of up to €10,000 will be prompted to take a selfie via the app, which will then be verified against the reference image on file. This enables secure authentication without any physical devices.
The bank noted that this innovation eliminates the need for card readers in internet banking and allows for same-day processing of high-value payments. Transfers to accounts in other banks submitted before 2:00 p.m. will typically be received within the same business day.
AIB emphasised that this advancement is part of its ongoing efforts to improve the customer experience by combining security with greater ease of use in digital banking.
