Dublin: A man has been arrested in connection with an assault on Child Welfare and Integration Minister Roderic O’Gorman during election campaigning over the weekend in Blanchardstown. Gardaí detained the 30-year-old suspect, who allegedly attempted to drive away the Green Party minister during a door-to-door canvassing effort, physically assaulting him and causing campaign materials to fall from O’Gorman’s hand. Thanks to the swift intervention of a Garda escort, the minister was able to exit safely, while the suspect was apprehended on the scene. The man is scheduled to appear in Blanchardstown District Court this morning.
In response to the incident, Minister O’Gorman expressed his deep concern regarding the increasing threats faced by politicians. “Direct engagement with the public is a cornerstone of our democracy,” he said, “and it is essential that candidates can campaign freely and safely, without fear, in the lead-up to the election.” He emphasised the importance of ensuring the safety of all politicians and campaigners, attributing a rise in hostility to widespread misinformation, particularly on social media.
Prime Minister Simon Harris also condemned the attack, underscoring that “violence has no place in a modern democracy” and stating that incidents of this nature are wholly unacceptable and unjustifiable. The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the democratic process and the individuals who partake in it.
