His death was confirmed by the Capuchin Franciscans, who described his legacy as one of unwavering compassion and service. Brother Kevin established the Capuchin Day Centre on Bow Street in 1969, a humble initiative that began by serving 50 meals a day and eventually grew to provide food, clothing, and support services to over 800 people daily by 2018.
National Outpouring of Condolences
President Michael D. Higgins led tributes, describing Brother Kevin as “a man of deep faith and boundless compassion” who “dedicated his life to serving those most in need.” The president praised his work as “a profound act of humanity and spiritual conviction”.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin also paid tribute, saying:
“Brother Kevin was an extraordinary figure who worked tirelessly for over five decades to support those who had fallen through the cracks of society. His compassion, determination, and unwavering commitment were an inspiration.”
A Life of Service
Brother Kevin’s work earned international recognition. During Pope Francis’s visit to Ireland in 2018, the pontiff visited the Capuchin Day Centre, highlighting the impact of Brother Kevin’s mission on the global stage.
Archbishop Dermot Farrell of Dublin also paid tribute, calling Brother Kevin a “beacon of hope” whose life embodied the teachings of St. Francis of Assisi.
“He saw the face of Christ in every person he served, and in return, gave nothing but love,” the archbishop said.
Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers described Brother Kevin as “a miracle worker”.
Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald hailed him as “a legend and a champion of the poor”, while Labour Party leader Ivana Bacik acknowledged his “extraordinary and selfless service”.
Lord Mayor of Dublin Ray McAdam said, “Brother Kevin was one of the city’s most compassionate and selfless figures.”
In recognition of his service, Brother Kevin was awarded the Freedom of the City of Dublin in 2015, presented by then Lord Mayor Christy Burke.
Funeral Arrangements
A Book of Condolence will remain open at the Mansion House until Friday. Funeral services will take place at St. Mary of the Angels Church on Church Street, Dublin. Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, followed by burial at Dardistown Cemetery.
