Dublin: Ireland’s largest trade union, SIPTU, has highlighted the urgent need to improve pay and working conditions for healthcare assistants (HCAs), identifying them as one of the most stressed occupational groups in the country.
A recent SIPTU survey revealed that the majority of HCAs are seeking better treatment, improved pay, and benefits, alongside recognition as a professional grade. The findings underscore systemic challenges in the sector, particularly for those employed in private nursing homes and private home care services.
Key Findings from the Survey
- Main Challenges for HCAs:
- Low Staffing Levels: 67% cited inadequate staffing as a critical issue.
- Poor Pay: 54% highlighted insufficient wages as a major problem.
- Workplace Stress: 51% reported significant stress linked to their roles.
- Issues Specific to the Private Sector:
- 93% of HCAs in private nursing homes and home care services identified low pay as their most pressing concern.
- A lack of benefits, including pensions and maternity pay, was also flagged as a significant issue.
- Other Workplace Problems:
- Job stress: 36%
- Lack of recognition: 35%
- Overwork: 18%
- Family reunification challenges: 11%
Calls for Reform
- Better Pay and Conditions: 91% of respondents emphasised the need for improved wages and service conditions.
- Professional Recognition: 96% expressed support for the introduction of a registered professional grade for HCAs within the health service.
SIPTU’s Response
SIPTU Sector Organiser Sharon Cregan stated that the survey reflects deep concerns among HCAs about pay, working conditions, and recognition. She noted that these issues are particularly pronounced in the private sector, where HCAs face greater challenges compared to their counterparts in public healthcare settings.
“The findings clearly demonstrate that healthcare assistants feel undervalued and overburdened,” said Creggan. “Urgent action is needed to address these challenges, ensure fair pay, and provide the professional recognition HCAs deserve.”
The union has called for immediate steps to address the issues raised, advocating for systemic reforms to enhance working conditions and ensure healthcare assistants receive the respect and compensation commensurate with their critical role in the healthcare system.
