Dublin: The mosque at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland in Clonskeagh has reopened following a nine-month closure, bringing relief and celebration to members of the Muslim community in south Dublin.
The mosque had been closed in April last year after internal clashes between two groups, raising concerns about safety, security, and governance. The closure also prompted questions regarding financial oversight and accountability within the centre, with legal proceedings initiated in relation to the dispute.
Board members of the Centre and several prominent figures attended the reopening ceremony, including guests who travelled from abroad. Board member Zahid Jamil said the Centre remains committed to unity and respect, stating that hate speech has no place in a house of worship. A reception was later held for ambassadors and members of the wider Muslim community.
While the mosque itself had been closed, associated facilities—including the school, restaurant and shop—remained operational throughout the period. However, worshippers in south Dublin were unable to access the mosque for daily and Friday prayers during the closure.
The mosque has capacity for approximately 5,000 worshippers. Attendance can reach up to 3,500 during major religious festivals such as Eid, while around 1,000 people typically attend Friday prayers.
