Dublin – Political tensions within Ireland’s coalition government are raising serious concerns about its long-term stability, amid growing signs of mistrust and internal discord. Analysts suggest that the partnership between Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris is becoming increasingly strained, with fundamental disagreements threatening to derail the administration.
Former Fine Gael TD Ivan Yates has warned that a collapse of the government would not be unexpected, citing deteriorating relationships, policy contradictions, and a lack of cohesion among senior figures. He highlighted Simon Harris’s shifting positions, particularly on the housing crisis, as a major source of instability. Yates noted that policies Harris previously endorsed as Taoiseach are now being questioned or reversed in his new role as Deputy Prime Minister.
“There is a growing lack of consistency and mutual trust,” said Yates, adding that leaks from within the Cabinet and visible tensions between key coalition leaders are eroding confidence both within the government and among external stakeholders.
Of particular concern is the relationship between Harris and Micheál Martin, which insiders describe as increasingly dysfunctional. “The Cabinet lacks unity. If this situation persists, the government’s collapse is a real possibility,” Yates warned.
Property developers have also expressed a lack of confidence in the government’s approach to the housing crisis, reportedly viewing Harris as an obstacle to meaningful progress. According to Yates, developers are frustrated by policy reversals and what they see as Harris’s inconsistent leadership, which they argue is undermining trust and delaying critical solutions.
The current coalition, formed with the aim of delivering stability and addressing urgent national issues such as housing and healthcare, now faces growing pressure to realign or risk losing public and political support.
