Dublin – A confidential report submitted to An Garda Síochána has revealed widespread job dissatisfaction among members of the force, particularly within the road policing division. The report, compiled under the leadership of an anonymous Garda, has been deemed credible by Commissioner Drew Harris.
According to the report, there is a troubling level of disengagement and neglect of duty among certain Garda members. Both Commissioner Harris and Chairwoman of the Policing and Community Safety Authority, Elaine Byrne, described the findings as deeply concerning.
Elaine Byrne confirmed that the authority received the report in June and noted that some Gardaí appeared to be demonstrating a “complete disregard” for their responsibilities—despite being aware that their performance was under review. She described the document as a “wake-up call” for the organisation.
The report highlights a lack of motivation and accountability within the road policing unit, raising serious concerns about individual performance. Byrne further criticised the apparent absence of an effective performance management system and urged the Commissioner to publish the findings without undue delay.
In response, Commissioner Harris acknowledged the seriousness of the situation but stressed that the report could only be published once all necessary steps have been taken to protect the anonymity of those involved. He confirmed that a working group has been established to assess the report’s recommendations and to scrutinise the activities of the road policing unit in detail.
