Dublin: Ireland’s busiest railway line, connecting Dublin’s Connolly Station to Grand Canal Dock, has been temporarily closed for major renovations. This marks the first comprehensive upgrade to the line in 20 years. The renovation work commenced recently and is scheduled to continue until January 6.
The route, which handles approximately 100,000 train movements annually between Connolly and Pearse stations, has been closed during this period to facilitate essential upgrades. Iarnród Éireann explained in a statement that the timing was deliberately chosen as it coincides with the quietest travel period of the year.
Key renovation tasks include a full inspection and maintenance of the Loopline Bridge. The company emphasised that postponing the works would necessitate up to two years of night work or the imposition of temporary speed restrictions, which could lead to significant delays and increased costs.
Service Adjustments:
- DART services between Connolly and Grand Canal Dock are suspended.
- A limited shuttle bus service, operated by Dublin Bus and accepting rail tickets, will be available.
- The Connolly-Rosslare Europort Intercity service will include a bus transfer between Connolly and Bray.
- Northern and Maynooth commuter services will terminate at Connolly Station.
- Late-night services will operate exclusively between Connolly and Pearse stations from 11 PM on New Year’s Eve.
- On January 2 and 3, Connolly and Pearse stations will operate extended hours from 6 AM to 6 PM to accommodate returning passengers.
Passengers are advised to check updated schedules and plan their journeys accordingly during this renovation period.
