Cork – A major milestone has been reached for regional infrastructure as Cork County Council has officially signed a contract for the construction of the long-anticipated M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy motorway.
The signing ceremony, held at Cork County Hall, was attended by Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien, and Minister of State for Rural Transport Gerry Buttimer. The project marks a significant step in improving connectivity between Cork City, Cork Port, and national transport networks.
Construction Timeline and Scope
Construction on the 11-kilometre motorway is expected to commence shortly, with completion scheduled for summer 2028. The route will connect Cork Port at Ringaskiddy to the Jack Lynch Tunnel and the M8 Cork–Dublin motorway, creating a vital link for freight and passenger traffic.
Project Funding and Delivery
The total cost of the project is estimated at €456 million, with €206 million in construction works already under contract. The main construction contract has been awarded to BAM, and the development is being funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
The M28 forms a critical component of Project Ireland 2040, the government’s long-term planning framework. The motorway is expected to play a central role in enhancing Ireland’s connectivity with European ports and trade corridors, reinforcing Cork’s strategic position in national and international logistics.
“The M28 will significantly improve access to one of Ireland’s busiest ports and drive economic growth for Cork and the wider region,” said Taoiseach Micheál Martin. “It’s a key investment in our national infrastructure and a cornerstone of our future growth under Project Ireland 2040.”
