Dublin – The Dáil Éireann is set to hold a vote of confidence in Speaker Verona Murphy today, following a week of parliamentary disruption. The debate and vote on the motion will take place later in the day, with Murphy expected to retain her position as she enjoys the support of government parties and independent TDs.
The confidence motion comes in response to a controversial ruling on speaking rights in Parliament, which led the opposition to consider tabling a no-confidence motion against the Speaker. To resolve the dispute and reaffirm Murphy’s authority, the government has preemptively introduced a motion of confidence.
Week of Disruptions in the Dáil
The Dáil proceedings have been at a standstill for a week, marked by intense political turmoil. Last week’s parliamentary sessions saw heated exchanges, accusations, counter-accusations, shouting, and disruptions, including allegations of misogynistic remarks.
On Tuesday, tensions escalated during leaders’ question time, as disputes over speaking rights brought proceedings to the brink of conflict. In protest, all major opposition party leaders walked out of the chamber, publicly declaring a lack of confidence in Speaker Murphy.
The following day, Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald called for Murphy’s resignation, accusing her of bias and undermining the integrity of the Dáil. However, Murphy firmly rejected calls for her resignation, stating that she remains committed to carrying out her duties.
Despite their dissatisfaction, opposition TDs have assured that they will not disrupt proceedings during today’s debate on the motion. They acknowledged that further disruptions would be viewed negatively by the public, with one TD stating that “people are fed up with political infighting.”
