Zurich: At least 40 people have died and more than 100 others have been injured following a devastating fire and explosion during New Year’s Eve celebrations at the popular Crans-Montana ski resort in Switzerland.
The incident occurred at around 1.30am on New Year’s Day at the crowded Le Constellation bar, where an estimated 1,000 people had gathered to welcome the new year amid music and lighting displays. Witnesses reported hearing a sudden loud explosion, after which a fire spread rapidly, filling the venue with thick smoke within minutes and trapping many inside.
Emergency services said parts of the building’s roof partially collapsed as the blaze intensified, hampering escape efforts. A large-scale rescue operation was launched, involving around 40 ambulances and 10 helicopters. The injured were transported to hospitals in Sion, Lausanne, Geneva and Zurich. Authorities confirmed that several victims remain in intensive care, while some hospitals have reached capacity.
Swiss police said there is no indication of terrorism or a deliberate attack. Initial investigations suggest that fireworks or pyrotechnic devices used during the celebrations may have sparked the fire. The inquiry is ongoing.
Many of the injured are believed to be foreign tourists. A helpline and support centre have been established to assist the families of victims, and a temporary no-fly zone has been imposed over the area as investigations continue.
