Dubai: The Dubai government has officially implemented a four-day work week for public sector employees as part of its expanded “Our Flexible Summer” programme. The initiative, which began as a pilot project in 2023, has shown significant success in improving productivity, employee well-being, and overall job satisfaction.
The 2024 edition of the program commenced on July 1 and will run through Friday, September 12. Following the success of last year’s trial—conducted across 15 government departments—this year’s programme has been expanded to include 21 institutions.
Under the initiative, employees are divided into two groups with adjusted working hours:
- Group One works eight hours per day from Monday to Thursday, with Fridays off.
- Group Two works seven hours per day from Monday to Thursday and four and a half hours on Friday.
The programme aligns with the UAE’s broader “Year of Community” initiative, aimed at strengthening social cohesion and enhancing quality of life for residents.
The flexible work policy mirrors similar strategies in the private sector, where remote work and reduced office hours are increasingly encouraged. A Dubai Government survey released in November 2024 highlighted how flexible schedules help alleviate road congestion and improve work-life balance. Additionally, a UAE government white paper published in January 2025 outlined various economic and social benefits tied to remote and flexible working policies in both public and private sectors.
The Dubai Government Human Resources Department, which is overseeing the implementation of the summer work programme, emphasises its focus on promoting work-life balance, boosting employee morale, and fostering stronger family relationships—particularly during the school holiday period.
Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, Director-General of the Dubai Government Human Resources Department, described the initiative as a direct result of the successful pilot, stating:
“The overwhelming positive outcomes from last year’s trial have laid the foundation for this year’s expansion. Our goal is to create a more adaptable, productive, and family-friendly work environment.”
