Dublin: A new €1.4 million helicopter hangar has officially opened at Custume Barracks, Athlone, enhancing operations for Ireland’s Emergency Aeromedical Service (EAS), run by the Air Corps.
Speaking at the opening, Tánaiste and Minister for Defence Simon Harris praised the service’s vital role in delivering rapid medical care, particularly in remote areas, since its launch in 2012. The EAS has completed over 4,300 missions, significantly contributing to life-saving efforts across the country.
The new facility will enable Air Corps technicians to perform essential inspections and maintenance, ensuring aircraft are mission-ready. Minister Harris emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening emergency care, noting the Air Corps’ professionalism and dedication.
Defence Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Seán Clancy hailed the development as a key step forward, acknowledging the partnership with the National Ambulance Service and the vital role of crews in delivering critical, time-sensitive care.
